Understanding Electrocardiograms (ECGs)

An electrocardiogram, commonly referred to as an ECG or EKG, is a non-invasive test that records the electrical activity of your heart over a period of time. It's a crucial tool used by medical professionals to assess the heart's health and diagnose various cardiac conditions.

How Does an ECG Work?

During an ECG, small sticky sensors called electrodes are placed on your chest, arms, and legs. These electrodes are attached to an ECG machine, which detects the electrical signals produced by your heart each time it beats. The machine then translates these signals into a visual graph, known as an electrocardiogram, allowing a physician to evaluate the heart's rhythm, rate, and electrical impulses.

What is an ECG Used For?

An ECG is used to help diagnose and monitor several heart conditions, including:

  • Arrhythmias: Irregular heartbeats that may be too fast, too slow, or erratic.
  • Coronary Artery Disease: Blocked or narrowed arteries in your heart.
  • Heart Attacks: Damage to the heart muscle resulting from reduced blood flow.
  • Cardiomyopathy: Thickened or enlarged heart muscle.
  • Heart Valve Disorders: Problems with one or more of the heart's valves.

What to Expect During Your ECG

Getting an ECG at MedPro Primary Care is a straightforward and quick process:

  1. Preparation: You may be asked to remove your upper clothing to place electrodes on clean skin. A gown will be provided for comfort and modesty.
  2. Attachment: Our healthcare professional will attach electrodes to your chest, arms, and legs. These are painless and only adhere to your skin.
  3. Recording: Once the electrodes are in place, you’ll be asked to lie still and breathe normally while the ECG machine records your heart’s activity. This usually takes just a few minutes.
  4. Completion: The electrodes are gently removed, and you can resume your daily activities immediately.
